Beginner Millinery Course

This 3 day millinery course will introduce you to the wonderful world of millinery, to start you on a path to learn more advanced skills. Whether you are looking for a new skill or wish to become a milliner, this course is for you.

  • Be introduced to the millinery materials from which hats are made.
  • Find where to source these materials
  • Learn how to block a fascinator base with sinamay, (one of the most popular foundation materials) using a traditional wooden block.
  • Explore various trimming ideas.
  • Learn about different head shapes etc.

Skills learnt:

  • At the end of the three days, you will have made your own unique sinamay piece
  • Completed a sinamay fascinator base using traditional blocking skills.
  • Learnt how to add a professional wired edge.
  • Made sinamay bias binding for finishing the edge.
  • Added a sinamay binding for trimming the fascinator

Skills needed:

Able to use a needle and thread.

  • Tape measure
  • Pen and paper
  • Needle and thread (neutral colour)
  • Scissors

Feather Flower Making Workshop

Learn how to make this beautiful flower from feathers. This half day workshop will introduce you to, or extend you, in the art of feather shaping, curling and assembly of this peony flower.

The finished flower could be used for a trim on your hat, a statement piece on its own, on a fascinator, or a flower crown. It can also be used as a bridal headpiece or incorporated into a bridal bouquet. Many more ways to use this piece will be discussed in the workshop.

Skills learnt:

  • How to manipulate and curl feathers
  • How to use finished flower a number of ways
  • Valuable flower making skills for other flowers
  • Leave this class with a completed flower

Materials supplied:

  • Feather
  • Glue

Please bring:

  • Scissors
  • Tape measure or ruler. Optional; embellishment for centre ie. a flat small brooch, flat button (Approx size 2 - 3 cms).

Ribbon workshop

One of Peggy's signature techniques. She rediscovered this long established technique 20 years ago after attending a retrospective millinery exhibition in Sydney.

Learn the art of manipulating ribbon. Either pleated or folded this technique can be used in a variety of ways. Make a hat, a headband as illustrated, or a standalone piece for a fascinator, ribbon crown etc. Many more ways will be discussed in the workshop. Other ribbon ideas will be demonstrated with other types of ribbon including satin ribbon.

Skills learnt:

  • How to fold, or pleat Petersham ribbon.
  • Use the pleated piece and shape it for the required piece.

Matertials supplied:

  • Petersham ribbon (Limited colours)

Please bring:

  • Needle and thread.
  • Scissors.
  • Pins.
  • Piece of discarded cardboard (cereal packet) or similar.
  • Optional: Your own lengths of 2 or 3 mtrs. of Petersham ribbon the colours of your choice (width 5cm). N.B. Petersham millinery ribbon NOT grosgrain.
