News. Textile Training Programme
14th of August, 2019
New funding from Bairdwatson and the Turleton Trust has paved the way for a textile training programme for residents of South Ayrshire – Foundation Level: Sewing Skills for Industry.
This programme will commence on September 30th for eight weeks. The initiative will see participants take part in the programme three days a week, plus a work placement one day a week for the last four weeks. An additional work placement may be available for those keen to continue their training. Participants will be supported with appropriate travel expenses and there will also be a pick-up service from Cumnock Bus Station for those opting to use public transport. The progamme aims to identify a new generation of skilled sewing machinists.
Foundation Level: Sewing Skills for Industry continues The Prince’s Foundation aim of addressing the shortage of skills within the textile industry. The Textile Training Centre at Dumfries House is actively seeking to address this and preserve the industry for future generations by expanding into an employability linked training course, delivering in-depth sewing skills to 6 learners over an intensive period of time followed by a work placement opportunity for those who demonstrate the required skills to succeed in the industry.
On successful completion of the training and work-placement, the participant will be eligible for employment or a modern apprenticeship within the industry depending on their skills and aptitude. Progression to one of our partner colleges January start programmes will also be possible. The local industry is keen to recruit machinists who can produce high-quality goods to a professional standard and in a timely manner. This programme will cover the key skills as well as the soft skills needed to succeed.
An information session will be held on September 2nd in Ayr, venue and times to be confirmed, followed by a taster day on September 16th at the Dumfries House Textile Centre.
