Traditional and Craft Skills The Kuanyshev Traditional & Craft Skills Centre is designed to deliver a wide range of courses supported by Dumfries House Education and The Prince’s Trust. The centre comprises a Wood Craft Carpenters Workshop, a Stone Masons Shed and the original water-powered Sawmill building which houses toilets and a multi-purpose classroom space

Housed at the renovated Water Powered Sawmill, the Traditional Skills Centre provides opportunities for students to learn core and transferable skills associated with traditional building skills in Stone Masonry, Dry Stone Walling and Rural Woodcraft as well as an introduction to industry standard construction skills in Plastering, Painting, Plumbing, Electrical and Brickwork. Students compare traditional and modern techniques and gain an overview of various aspects of the construction industry. Courses are designed to cater for young people aged 16 to 24 who are not in employment, education or training and working closely with our sister charity The Prince’s Trust, courses provide experiences and outcomes to open up future employment opportunities. The Traditional Skills Centre also supports school education through activities based around residential activities allowing pupils to experience introductory Craft Skills.
