The Samuel Smith Table. This breakfast table was the first piece of furniture purchased for the House by the 5th Earl of Dumfries.
The mahogany breakfast table with its delicate open fretwork was supplied by Samuel Smith, a Scottish furniture maker operating in London. It closely matches plate 33 from Chippendale's Gentleman and Cabinet Maker's Director and so highlights the importance of the catalogue in promoting his own designs over his competitors. A close copy of a Chippendale design could save the purchaser as much as 50 per cent over the cost of an original.
