The Thomas Chippendale four-poster bed. The majestic tester bed is the only known surviving bed from a design in the Director.

Refurbished in the nineteenth century, it has now been returned to its eighteenth-century best following painstaking research and restoration by Carvers and Gilders of London. It was fittingly known as ‘the best bed of Dumfries House’ and was by far the most expensive piece commissioned by the 5th Earl of Dumfries.
